We should
all demand Great Customer Service
I was in the
grocery store the other day and as usual the man who was checking the groceries
and the girl bagging the items, had no interaction with the customers. They
only seemed to interact with each other. As the checker was checking my items,
the girl was bagging the customer’s items in front of me. She became confused
and was giving my items to the other customer. The checker stopped her and she corrected
herself. Then I grabbed my bags thinking that my items were in the two bags I
picked up. As I started to walk away she shoved another bag in my hand that
seemed to have one item in it. I took it and when I arrived home and was going
through the bags, I realized she had given me someone else’s Groceries. Because
these two employees were not paying attention to their customers, they were not
doing their job. For me, I received some sliced meat that I will make use of,
but for the customer behind me, they will get home and find that they did not
have their dinner.
Learning Customer Service
After
college, I wanted to buy an Italian Delicatessen, so I started working for a
very successful Deli that had been in business for years. The first lesson I
learned was that when you are helping a customer, that customer is your only
focus and until you finish with that customer you never let your attention go
anywhere else.
When I
became a contractor, almost every morning at 6am I would go to a very large
lumber yard. Most of the time, I would go in, get my items and leave without
much banter with the clerk, But when the grandson of the owner was there, he
always greeted me by name and took the time to make sure I was satisfied. His
personal interaction made me feel appreciated and very loyal to that business.
Demand great Customer Service
All of us,
when we do business with anyone should demand Great customer service and if we
don’t get it, we should find another place to give our money. Sometimes I will
play a little game when I am in a grocery line. I want to see how long it will
take the checker to acknowledge me, so I will just stand there and say nothing.
It is shocking, when I can make it all the way through the transaction and no
words pass between the two of us.
Have you
ever been talking to a representative of a business and as you are asking them
for something, they respond with “well you know, you are not my only customer”.
This drive me crazy! When I hear that, the conversation is over and I will be
their customer no more.
Great Customer Service
My favorite
place to do business with is, “In and Out” Not only do I love their burgers and
fries, the people who work there are terrific. They are always friendly and accommodating.
I don’t think I ever have had a request denied, anytime I ask for something
special they always respond with an “absolutely”. The people who run “In and
Out” demand great customer service from their employees and we should follow their
lead and demand great customer service from all we do business with.
A little
secret in getting great customer service, try and use small businesses where
the owner is there for you to interact with. In my business of Property Management in Orange County Ca. I am always accessible to my clients. If you use a service, ask to speak
to the owner, and get to know them. And one way to get great customer service,
always treat the people who serve you with respect, remember, “do unto others”!
