Doing one thing and doing it Well
How often have we heard the phrase “Jack of all trades,
master of none”? I know many people who fit that description. In fact at my
home, that description fits me. I try and do everything, from repairs to
re-modeling, to cooking. I do a pretty a good job at most, but I also have had
quite a bit of experience at these tasks. But is it a good Idea for businesses
to be Jack of all trades.
In our society today, we like the one stop shop, we go to
Costco, or Sams Club for our shopping. We like Home Dept or Lowes for our home
improvement needs and of course we like Amazon.com for our on line shopping. In
fact I read that Walmart went from 1 million products on line last year to 5
million this year. Being “Jack of all Trades seem to be the norm now.
I am a customer at all those stores I mentioned, but I also
like the one product or one service businesses.
I like to compare McDonalds and
IN-N-OUT. McDonalds has a huge menu from Breakfast food to Burgers and Fries to
salads, while IN-N-OUT only sells Burgers, Fries and shakes. If you have ever
been to an IN-N-OUT you would agree that there is no comparison in service and
product. IN-N-OUT concentrates on their
few items that they sell and their service and they do it great,
McDonalds in my opinion has great fries, but their other food and their service
leaves a lot to be desired.
In my Business of Property Management in Orange County
Ca. I use repair people all the time,
and Handymen rarely do great work. They are less expensive and they do the
jobs, but they are the perfect example of “jack of all trades, Master of None”.
I try to avoid the handyman on anything complicated, I always try and get my
clients to understand that while a handyman may be cheaper in the short run, their work will probably need to be corrected down the road.
Home Depot is a great store and I have spent many hours
strolling through the aisles looking at the products and spending money. They
tried a few years ago to move into a more design style store called “Home Depot
Expo”. I never spent any money in those Expo stores and I was not alone. I
believe Home Depot closed all the Expo stores.
Home Depot does a great job at what they do, selling to contractors and
Home owners, but trying to get into the more design style store was out of their
wheel house and it did not go over well.
Some people and some businesses are able to do it all, but
for me, I like the person or business that concentrates on doing one thing and
doing it Great.
