Does Anyone Know the Rules?
I was watching football this weekend
and it amazes me how no one understands the rules anymore. All of us who enjoy
Football know that the NFL is trying to protect players from head injury. (Of
course if they really cared they would require all games are played on real
grass) The problem is that no one and that includes the players, coaches,
announcers and maybe even the referees really understands the rules.
There was a play, where a player was
in the process of trying to catch a pass. He was juggling the ball when he was
hit by the defensive player. The hit was shoulder to shoulder. The defensive
player clearly tried to avoid a helmet to helmet hit, because that would be a
penalty. The referees still called a penalty saying it was a helmet to helmet
hit. Now it is understandable, At the speed the play was made, that the referee
could have thought it was Helmet to helmet. They do not review penalties (I
think they should) so the referee only gets one shot at it and it is at real
speed.
What made me laugh though, is the
announcer. He acknowledged that the hit was shoulder to shoulder and then said
that because the player catching the ball had his head snap back when he was
hit, it gave the referee the impression that it was a helmet to helmet hit. Then
he said that it was a good call. I am confused! Was it a good call because it
was the correct call, but it was not helmet to helmet as the referee had said
so it was not the correct call? Did the announcer mean that it should have been
a penalty for some other reason, which the referee did not see? My point is
that there is no clarity in the rules, and the announcer, who was a player
years ago, basically said that it was a good call because it looked like a
penalty.
In my business of Property Management
in Orange County Ca. I work very hard to have clarity to rules that Tenants
need to understand. It is not always easy and Tenants sometime conveniently
forget the rules, but just like the referee, I need to throw a flag and unfortunately
penalize the Tenant. Every time I try to be lenient with the rules, I find that
the Tenants will take advantage of my leniency.
The reason rules are important in
sports and in my Property Management business, is that if people don’t have a
road map to follow, then Chaos will become commonplace, and that will make life
more difficult for everyone.
