Are you interested
in a Net Zero Home?
With energy
rates going up, especially in California due to laws requiring more energy from
renewable sources, will Net Zero Homes actually become main stream? I doubt in
my lifetime that will be the case, but for some it may be a reality.
A Net Zero Home,
is one that creates more electricity then it uses in a year. Some builders are
trying to push this type of home, but of course the big hurdle is the cost.
Just like electric cars, most people have not been convinced that the added
cost is worth it. It takes years to make back the money in cost savings from
the initial investment, so really the
only people who will be interested are the environmentally conscious, and the
wealthy, who like to be among the first to have something, at least until the
cost comes down.
Everyone would
love to have a home that has less energy costs, and even if you don’t buy into
the climate hysteria that we have been hearing about for years, we all want to
live in a clean environment, so this may be a good thing for builders to try
and concentrate on.
Now if you think
you are going to be able to unplug from the grid that is not the case.
A Net
Zero Home relies mainly on Solar Power, so for the times that the Sun is not
supplying enough energy, you still need the grid for power.
I am still not
sold on Solar Power, I say all the time, that when they can come up with Solar
Landscape lights that work for more than a month, then maybe I will be more
convinced. Also with all the new energy we are discovering due to new
technology, is this really the way to go, or even a wave of the future. I have
a feeling that there may be better technology in the future that will make the
modern day solar industry obsolete.
The Net Zero
Home is a great objective to have and I hope I see the day that we all have
one, but for now I don’t think they will be popping up in very many places. In
my business of Property Management in Anaheim, Ca. I would love to manage a Net
Zero Home, and if I do, I will report back and let you know what I think.
