When it comes to housing Boomers are different
59% of Baby Boomers do not plan to sell their homes
when they retire. This is much different from generations in the past, but why?
78% say they like their homes. This is a great
thing and being that I am not only a Real Estate Broker, but I am also a
General Contractor, this should make Contractors change the way they build
houses for future generations. If the trend of people staying in their homes
long after retirement continues then contractors should build houses with the
needs of people as they get older in mind. Build more single story homes, make
hallways wider and build homes that are easier to convert to accommodate people
as they get older.
54% say they have not saved enough to retire
comfortably. With this anxiety, the last thing people want to do is make any
changes in their lives that bring on uncertainty. Their homes bring them
stability and that gives them comfort.
4.7% plan to downsize. This seems to be a very low
number, and I am sure that as people get older that number will increase dramatically.
4.4% plan to move out of state. Being that I am in
Southern California, I am always amazed when people who have lived here in this
beautiful weather for years, sell their homes and move to a state that has a
much harsher climate. Most people like the State that they live in and to move
is a huge decision, but especially with expensive States like California, moving
may be the only option people have when they are no longer in their prime
earning years.
In my business of Property Management in Anaheim
Ca. I deal with many people who are retired and have to make hard decisions on where
they are going to spend their retirement years. Most of the time it has to do
with money and how much they will need to live on.
Many times a home is the largest savings that
a person has and to have any kind of decent life style they may have to sell. That’s
why I say that, out of all these statistics, the one that is not realistic is the
4.7% that plan to downsize. That number will without a doubt increase
dramatically as time goes on.
