All Together, Now!
People seem to do everything in bunches. There was a new In
In-N-Out Burger that opened up about a block from my office. For about 5 days
the crowds were unbelievable. The drive through was long and 5 lanes wide. Then
the lines just went away and now are a normal In-N-Out with normal crowds. My
question is why the large crowds for 5 days? The burgers were the same as any
other In-N-Out, the prices were the same as any In-N-Out and they were giving nothing
away except some paper hats to the kids.
Did all these people go there because it was new?
I think people just want to be part of something and don’t
want to be left out. In my business of Property Management in Anaheim Ca. I see
this behavior all the time. I have told the story many times about the people
who bought homes during the housing boom, not because they liked the home, but
because they just needed to buy something, they did not want to be left
out. The Apple Computer craze, when they come out with a new product how people
sleep in the street for a week just to be one of the first to have the new
product, even though they could order one on line and have it in a few days. It
all comes down to the old saying “People are Sheep” or “Misery Loves Company”,
pick you favorite cliche.
I have this feeling that if everyone else is doing it, why
not do something different. I know that the ridicule may be hard to handle,
but after a while you will learn to embrace it. Just because you do something
different does not mean you are right or even better off, but I would rather
make a mistake on my own then follow the herds off the cliff.
Look at people who are successful in their lives and I don’t
just mean financial success, but people who are happy with who they are. Most
of them have followed their own path and went against the crowds.
I know being
the Lone Wolf can be a bit frightening, but the satisfaction you will feel when
things work out is amazing.
In Real Estate, the smart money always goes against the
crowds. When everyone is buying, stay away, you have missed the bottom and are
probably approaching the top of the market. Be smart but don’t be typical and
you will live a much happier life, or at least a much more interesting one
