It’s amazing what people save
I have been watching this show on TV called "Strange Inheritance"
and it is fascinating what people save and collect. Of course in this show, it
shows you how much the things that people inherited are worth. Most of the
things have brought a wind fall to the beneficiaries, but one of them, a bunch
of junk cars was more work then profit.
I
am pretty sure that most of the junk people collect is just that, junk.
In my business of Property Management in Anaheim Ca. And as a Contractor, I have seen so many
homes that were stuffed with junk. These hoarders keep everything and most of
the stuff is not worth keeping. Why do we as people keep stuff? We make fun of Hoarders but so many people
pay a monthly fee to store junk in a storage facility. I am jealous of people who came up with the
Idea of storing peoples stuff, they make a fortune.
As a Property Manager, sometimes I need to let my Tenants
know that they need to get rid of things and that the home that they are
renting is not a storage facility, especially when they have the yard filled
with old cars or other things that should be in
a junk yard. Getting people to
get rid of their junk is not easy and not always an easy conversation to have. I
try and lay down the rules before these situations come up, but people have a
tendency to hear what they want.
It all comes down to my original question, “Why do we as
people keep stuff”?
I have heard so many opinions to that question, but the one
I like is that we hold on to things, because we always think we will someday
find a use for them.
We hear the occasional story about the people who find the
box of baseball cards in the attic that are worth millions (Like in the
show I mentioned at the top) but the
reality is that all that stuff we have loaded in those boxes in our closets and
our attics really should be thrown away. I have a policy, when I come across a
box that I have no Idea what is inside, and I have never had any reason to open
the box, I throw it away. Maybe I have lost a million in old cards, but what I
don’t know won’t hurt me!
