The best Shingle may surprise you
When your roof leaks, you probably need to replace the
entire roof. Now once you decide that you are going to get a new roof. The question
is what type of roof you want. Wood shingle roofing is probably out of the
question and even if you lived in an area that does allow wood, you really
would not want to have it installed. In fact the only wood shingle installation
I have seen in the last 15 years was to a historic home that wanted to keep its
authenticity.
There are many styles and types of roofs out there and in my
years as a contractor, I have seen many styles. Clay Tile roof are very nice
and when they are new, they look great, but as they age, their look fades and
they also can crack and also birds and other animals lodge themselves inside
the tile. I am not a big fan of clay tile when it comes to roofs. There are also
cement tiles, and they look very nice, many of them look like wood shingle
roofs. They lay much flatter then the clay tile roofs and are less susceptible
to animals crawling inside. They still can break with age. There are aluminum
roofs, these in my opinion are a terrible choice, and they bend and also can be
noisy when it rains. With all three of these roofs, you do not want anyone to
walk on them, unless it is absolutely necessary.
My favorite roof is the least expensive of them all, I like
the composition roof. They lay flat so nothing will get inside. You can walk on
the comp roof without breaking the shingle, and if installed properly, a comp
roof will last for years. Now, they make beautiful dimensional 50 year comp
roofs that are installed on million dollar homes and they look great. I am a
fan of the Timberline brand; I have Timberline shingles on my home and in my
business of Property Management in Anaheim Ca. I recommend this brand and type
of roof to all my clients.
The composition roofs of today come in all sorts of colors
and dimensions and you can go to the Timberline web site http://www.gaf.com and see what is available.
Getting the right installer is also key, if you are willing
to pay a little more and want a great guarantee, then I recommend Home Depot,
they will give you the best guarantee out there and also they have different
finance programs. They are more expensive then the independent roofer and there
are many good ones out there. As with any contractor you want to hire, do your
home work.
When looking for your new roof, don’t let others try and
tell you that you need to have the most expensive tile put on your roof,
because the least expensive composition roof is not only the best roof, but
also the best looking, in my opinion
