You can please some of the people!
I like little phrases. “You can please some of the people
some of the time, but you can’t please all of the people all of the time”. The reason
that I like these small and to the point phrases is because they make so much sense
in a short and to the point sentence.
So much of our time is thinking about ways to please as many
people as possible. That makes sense, because so many of us are in a sales
position and we want to make people happy so they use ore service or product.
The problem is that we make so much effort trying to please everyone that much
of that time is wasted on people who we will never please, and we don't spend enough time with the people we can please.
When we talk to people, we can tell if they are interested
in what we are saying by the way they look at us, or the way they are looking
into our eyes. We know if we are going to be able to please them with our words
or actions within a few minutes of speaking with them, but even when we know
that they are not interested, we continue to try and get their attention. As a
man, I think this goes back to our youth in trying to get the girl that is not
interested in us to be interested. They always tell you never give up when she
ignores you, so you keep trying even to the point of humiliation and sometimes
it did work, not often but just that one victory affected the way we act as
adults.
Not giving up is a good thing, but we also have to realize
that we can’t always please people, in fact some people will just not like us
and there may be no rational reason for it, but as hard as it is to accept, we
may not be everyone’s cup of tea.
To me, it is very frustrating when someone is trying to
please me, when I really am not interested. They seem so phony when they say
what they think I want to hear. I usually tell them to stop trying to please me
and just tell me the way it is, but I do have sympathy since I have been
selling for years, so I understand trying to please people. The worst is when people
use scripts when they try and sell me something, once I spot a script sales
person, I turn off quickly.
In my busyness of Property Management in Anaheim Ca. I am always in the middle of two sides and I
found that being more of an arbitrator then trying to please both sides is better.
The difference in being an arbitrator is that I try and make the two sides
please themselves instead of me trying to please both sides. I let the two
sides do the work, with the realization that I work for the Landlord and I have
their best interest at heart, but sometimes what they think is best for them,
is really not and in my arbitration I hope that they realize that point.
Sometimes they do, but often they don’t and I just have to remember it always
goes back to the point of not being able to please all of the people all of the
time, so I am satisfied with pleasing some of the people some of the time, as
long as I give the former my best shot.
