Where have all the athletes gone
It’s becoming more and more common in professional sports,
where players sit out a game to rest, that’s right, Rest. These are supposes to
be elite athletes and they make millions of dollars and they are too tired to
play. It seems to be more prevalent in Professional basketball and I am
starting to hear the commentators during a game show frustration over the
situation especially Jeff Van Gundy the once coach of the New York Knicks and
the Houston Rockets. He has on several occasions while he is announcing a game
shown frustration on how many players sit out the game, it seems as though if
you are a fan paying on average $54 per ticket and in New York around $139 per
ticket, you never know what players the team you are paying to see will play.
The other night the Lakers were playing the Atlanta Hawks at the Staples Center
in Los Angeles. The Lakers are having a very bad year so the only good thing
for the fans that go to the games, is to see the other teams and the Hawks are
the best in the Eastern Conference. The Hawks sat out 3 of their starting
players so they could rest. That is ridiculous and the fans paid for an
inferior product. I was watching a game tonight and the commentator was talking
about the same issue and he brought up a point that Michael Jordan in 6
championship seasons missed 6 total games; today a player will miss 6 games if
he has a bad hair day.
The NBA needs to stop teams from sitting their players and
fans need to stop going to games if this activity continues, In the NFL this is
not a problem because they only play once per week and the players have a much
different mind set, they play unless they are stopped. Baseball started this
practice by sitting players on a Sunday game, especially on a travel day, the
only excuse baseball has is that they play almost every day in a 162 game
season.
The big problem is that many fans can only afford to go to
one or two games per season and if the player you want to see is not playing,
what a disappointment, especially for the young kids. Kobe Bryant was another
player in his prime that played every game and there are others who take their
responsibility seriously but it is too common now for coaches to think there is
a need to rest players especially when it is time to start thinking about the
playoffs.
Going to a sporting event is no different than going to a
concert, Think how you would feel if you bought Tickets to a concert and the
lead singer decided to rest the night you were there. They had a fill in singer
and they sang the same songs but it was not what you paid to see. Going to a
sporting event is no different, even when players sit out, the fill in players
play the same game, but again, it is not what you paid for.
In my business of Property Management in Anaheim Ca. I never
send a fill in to do my job; if I did my client would fire me. Maybe professional
athletes need to be fired if they need to rest all the time, If the game is too
tiring for them, maybe they need to get a real job and see how much rest they
get.
