A picture can lie
We all have heard the old saying, “One picture is worth a
thousand words” and in most cases that can be true, but just as people lie, so
can pictures. I have made no attempt to hide my dislike for video when it comes
to Real Estate Marketing, in fact I actually think it hurts sales, but that is
my opinion and I would probably get 99 out of 100 other Realtors who would
disagree with me. I do love the still picture though and to me, without a doubt,
a good photo can make a huge difference in the amount of showings that you get
for a home you are trying to sell.
I don’t really understand why I get so many photos on my
Twitter account, but I really like looking at them and I am envious of many of
the photos that I see and I am also impressed with the talent that many of
these photographers have. But unfortunately, I also know that a photo, while it
can give you a great perspective of an event or place, it also, just like
people can lie.
If you ever have seen a Super Model in person, they look
very different then they do in photos and many times it may be a disappointment.
The same thing can be said for any picture you look at. Professional
photographers can do great things with lighting and shadows, just like the
people in the movie industry do and I like to call it “Smoke and Mirrors”. When
you look at a movie, they get you to see what they want you to see by using the
tricks of the trade and photography can use many of the same tricks. There was
a dress a couple of weeks ago that was making the rounds on social media and
the big question was, what color do you see. The answer was, it depends on the
shadow that the dress was in.
When you watch the news on TV, the same thing can be true
with regard to photo’s not telling the whole truth. They can crop a photo to
make people see what they want then to see, and that can make a huge difference
when it comes to public perception. If you want people to think an event was a
popular event, you can make a crowd of 10 people look like there was a huge
crowd there depending on how you shoot the crowd and you can also make a huge
crowd look like a few if you take the photo in a certain angle. I was watching
a news report and they had a tight shot with the camera and it looked like
there was a big crown at the event, but then when they pulled the camera back
there was a spattering of people there.
In my business of Property Management in Anaheim Ca. I want
people to visit the properties I have for rent, or for sale and I am going to
put photos out there that are going to get people into the properties. If the
photos look a little better then the property may look and that gets people
into the property for a better look then my job has been done. Am I lying about
the property? not really, I just want people to take a good look and they can’t
do that from a photo, so I am no different than the cereal commercial that says
what it has to get you to try their cereal.
It is all marketing and the bottom
line is “Caveat Emptor. Latin
for "let the buyer beware.
