Work hard and succeed?
You hear people say all the time, that they are working
harder then every before, yet they don’t seem to be getting anywhere. But is
that really true, because when we were growing up, we were told that hard work
will bring you success and if we slack off, then we will be a failure.
Hard work is important to success, but it most likely will
not be enough to guarantee it. For example if you dig ditches for a living,
then hard work is just part of your profession, but digging ditches, though a
noble enough profession can only get you so far when it comes to monetary
reward unless you start to dig bigger and bigger ditches and for that you need
to be more on the smart side then a hard worker.
Years ago, when I was starting out in construction I was
told to remove some concrete from a specific area, so I took a sledge hammer
and was working very hard and the concrete was winning the fight, then on the
job site there was a worker who asked me if I wanted him to remove the concrete
with his back hoe. I agreed and in ten minutes the concrete was removed. I
would have accomplished the task in a few hours and much sweat but the smart
move was to have the back hoe do the hard work. That lessen taught me that
smarter work is much more productive then harder work.
People always like to brag about how hard they are working
and how many hours they put into their job and I have a great deal of respect
for those people especially those entrepreneurs who are working on a low budget
and can’t hire people to help them. But the smart entrepreneur will also work
to make their life easier and also their work more profitable by finding ways
to get the same work done in less time and at a more profitable means. That may
mean hiring people or better software or some other means of making your
business more efficient.
In my business of Property Management in Anaheim Ca. I am
always looking for ways to improve the way I do my business and I sometimes am
successful at finding those ways and sometimes not but the key is to always be
looking and keeping your mind open. It sometimes seems much easier to just keep
banging your head against the wall everyday rather than finding a better and
easier way.
Do you ever think about criminals and how hard they seem to
work to break the law and if they just worked that hard to find a legal way to
do thing that they may actually be successful at it and not always be on the
run. This has proven true for many computer hackers that started out on the
wrong side of the law and now make a lot of money helping the law and I’m sure
they rest easier at night knowing that they are not being pursued by the
authorities.
Yes, hard works is important to your success, but remember
that hard work will only get you so far. It may be better to work smart rather
than to always work hard.
