Follow the bouncing ball
It is playoff time for the NBA, and if you like to watch
professional basketball, this is the time for you. I was watching a game last
night and I watched as a pass was thrown to another player and he was surprised
by the pass and missed it. He violated the first rule of basketball by not
following the bouncing ball. I grew up watching Magic Johnson making incredible
passes to his teammates and I always thought to myself, “How did they see that
ball coming” The answer was that they never took their eye off the ball.
This advice is not just important in sports, but in just
about every aspect of life and in my business of Property Management in Anaheim
Ca. I always try and keep my eye on the ball, because I don’t want something to
sneak up on me with me looking the other way. When I am in the middle of a
transaction, I never get excited about the sale until the title company calls
me and lets me know the property recorded. There are so many steps to go
through while the escrow process is going on and so much time between the
purchase contract and the close of Escrow that to take your eye off the ball
can prove a disaster.
Buyers can be difficult to deal with, because the remorse
factor has so much time to set in. With all the paperwork that is signed during
a transaction, fears has a way to settle in.
It reminds me, one day, I was ready to buy a car and I
searched around and found one that I liked, but it was in another dealership,
so the one dealership I was negotiating with, sent the salesman to go pick it
up. He came to my house and also picked me up to finalize the deal. The vehicle
was beautiful, but more then I wanted to spend, but I was ready to pull the
trigger. I was sitting in the dealership and all the paperwork was being done
and the loan was being hashed out and behind us was the very large man behind a
window working on the loan. He kept banging on the window getting my salesman
to get more and more information from me. I had told them before I went into
the dealership that I wanted the loan out of the way prior to me being picked
up, but unfortunately, they did not do their job and that large man pounding on
the glass for more and more info finally go to me and I got up and walked away.
That sale was lost because they did not do what I asked.
They thought that me, just being in the dealership was enough to close the
deal. If they had all the paperwork done before I came in, I would have bought
the car. They took their eye off the ball and I followed the bouncing ball to
another dealership and another vehicle.
Real Estate is a very difficult business and you really need
to keep your eye on the bouncing ball or your clients will also follow the ball
to another Agent and another home.
