Don’t back away from what you enjoy
I was talking to a friend the other day and he was going
through a rough time. He seemed down and very tired. Trying to take his mind
off his situation and knowing that he enjoys watching the NHL, I asked if he
was enjoying the playoffs, He said he has not watched. I was very surprised,
Years ago when we used to work out together every night, he would always try
and talk me into being a Hockey fan. He loved the game. My next question was
how his workouts are going and he said that he has not been working out at all.
Again, I was shocked; he also loved to work out. What I realized is that a big
part of his problem was that since he was going through a rough time, he also
stopped doing things that could clear his mind from his troubles and give him
some enjoyment.
I told him that he needed to get back in the gym and get
those workouts started up again, and he needs to start to watch a little Hockey.
I don’t know if he will follow my advice, but I hope he does.
Whenever I am
going through a rough time, I find that a good workout helps me think more
clearly and also while I am working out, I don’t think about the problem.
Sometimes when we are going through a rough patch, we feel
as though we should stop enjoying ourselves until we fix the problem, but just the
opposite is true, getting your mind away from the problem for a time can make
solving the problem much easier or at least give your mind a rest from the
problem. There is an old saying that you can be too close to the forest to see
the trees, so if we remove ourselves from the forest for a time, then we may be
able to see the tree’s better. Even if getting away from the problem for a
little while does not help solve the problem, it will do wonders for our
health.
In my business of Property Management in Anaheim Ca. I need
to make sure that I keep my workouts going and also watch sports on TV, because
when I do that, I don’t think about the problems of the day and that helps keep
me sane. I heard many years ago, that there are no problems, just situations
and while that does not always hold true, especially when the problem may be a
personal health problem, in most of the problems we face every day, they are
just situations that we need to find a way to solve. If we look at it that way,
it can become much easier.
Too often we look at solving a problem all at once, instead
of taking it step by step. I was talking to my Brother in-law the other day
about the Clippers and the Rockets and how the Rockets’ had to win three games
in a row. My Bother in-law said that the Rockets could not beat the clippers 3
games in a row. I told him that the Rockets did not have to win three games in
a row, just one at a time and so far they have won one at a time, twice. The
point is that if we look to solve the whole problem at once, it can seem overwhelming,
but if we take it piece by piece, it can become much more manageable.
Always remember, perception is reality. If we perceive something
to be overwhelming, it will be, but if we perceive something solvable, then it
will be. Always take a step back and close your eyes and see yourself solving
the problem and believe that you can do it. Once you believe you can do it then
the reality of your vision becomes a motivation to solving the problem.
