Will buying a home make you happy?
A big part of the American Dream has always been to own your
own home. The pattern that we learn as children is that we would go to college,
get a job, get married and then buy a home and grow a family. The order of
course of this traditional life has changed and many people have even skipped
some of the steps, but buying your own home is still a very big part of life.
But does owning a home really make people Happy?
Owning a
home can be a huge obligation and for most people it takes an enormous chunk
out of a person’s income, so there has to be sacrifices. You will need to
temper your entertainment and travel and buying things that you want. As a
Real Estate Broker that specializes in
Property Management in Orange County California, I see the tremendous excitement
that people have when they are about to buy a home, but I also see the anxiety
that goes along with the purchase.
When I was a kid and watching an episode of "I Love Lucy", I
remember when Lucy and Ricky were about to buy a home in the country,
Everything was fine, but one night Ricky was awaken in the middle of the night
with the fear that goes through many new home owners. “I Can’t Afford This Home”.
The way they shot the scene was brilliant. Ricky sat up in bed and his eyes
grew wide, you could just see the fear in his face.
I just closed an Escrow and
the husband went through a similar situation, not being able to sleep and
thinking about the home and how was he going to pay for it. This is a very
normal way to react to such a huge purchase, especially for the first time
buyer.
What I try and do is explain to the buyer the advantages in
buying a home and the money they spend is an investment in themselves and they
are paying their own mortgage not paying the Landlords mortgage. This
conversation I have with them may help, but the anxiety remains until the new
owner gets used to being a home owner and not a renter. This process can take
some time, but most do make it through and are happy they bought a home.
Being in this business for many years now, I think I can
answer the question I asked at the top. “Will buying a Home Make You Happy”.
For the most part, yes, buying a home can make you happy, but there are no
guarantees and you should make sure that you don’t purchase a home until you
are ready.
The American Dream of buying a home is a very good goal, but
it can be a huge burden for someone who is not ready or willing to do the
things necessary to be a successful home owner. There is no timetable of buying
a home and the pressure of low interest rate is a silly ploy by the government
to push people into home ownership. Buying a home for any reason other than you
want to be a homeowner and are ready, is a huge mistake and first time buyers
need to resist the temptation of jumping too soon. I have seen too many people
lose their homes because they were lured in by low interest rates and little
money down.
Make sure that when you do buy a home, you can afford your monthly
payments, but also be able to have a life outside the home. You want to be able
to go out to dinner every now and then, so don’t buy a home just to be a
prisoner in it.
