Doing it yourself can save money and be fun
I have been looking at vessel sinks for a long time and I
finally decided to buy one, so I went Home Depot.com and started to look. The
choices were huge and I looked at so many sinks that it was hard to make a
choice. I finally decided to go with a package deal that included the sink the
faucet and the drain. My choice was a Vigo Vessel sink and the whole package
was around $225.00.
Now I needed a vanity to put the sink on and I started to
look for the vanity but I was surprised at the prices so I decided to build my
own. Now I am a General Contractor, but not a furniture maker, so this was
going to be a first for me. I really did not know what type of Vanity I wanted,
but I knew I did not want drawers, so I went on Houze.com to get some Ideas. I
looked at what seemed like thousands of vanities and I started to put some
things together in my mind.
I bought some metal fence posts and cut them to the height I
wanted my sink and then I painted them black. I bought a pine stair tread material and
would use that as a shelf and then I bought a 1 ½ inch piece of pine for the
top of the vanity. I cut the design I wanted and put it all together. I wanted te look to be more rough then finish but I had no
real plans on how I wanted it to come out; I just designed as I was creating.
After I finished the vanity, I waterproofed it with “Bona Floor Poly”.
Now I was ready to install the sink and faucet. This was
very simple, I just needed to drill a couple of holes in the vanity, and the installation
was done. I used Chrome drain pipes; because they would be visible when you
looked at the sink and the chrome looks better then the plastic, although the chrome was very expensive.
I really like the look of the sink and the vanity and the
cost was much cheaper doing it myself and it was fun, because I had no
timetable to get it done.
