If people aren’t happy why would a business force them to stay?
How frustrating is it, when you sign up for a service and
then you find out that service is not what you bargained for, but you are
stuck. It happens all the time and I always wonder why businesses want to force
people to stay with them, if they don’t want to be with that business anymore.
I was talking to a friend the other day and I was telling
him that I decided to not sign people up for any long term contracts for my
Property Management Company. I told him that if someone is not happy, I want
them to be able to find a company that they will be happy with. He thought I
was crazy to allow people to break the contract without any ramifications, but
the more I think about it, the more I feel it is the right decision. I rarely
lose clients, but if a client is not happy, then I want them to be able to make
the decision to go without any worries.
I remember when I was first starting my business, there was
a client that wanted to join my company, but the company that they were with
would not let them out of their contract. It caused them great stress, because
that company was not performing the way they promised. They waited for the contract
to expire and then became a client of mine. I think back to that and I think
that company was wrong to create stress for these people and I do not want to
be one of those companies. My goal is to take the stress away from my clients,
not create stress.
I had signed a client recently and his property was being
rented out by three friends of his daughter. He wanted a property manager to
keep things in a business like fashion. I did the walk through and after that he
called and said his daughter’s friends were not happy about having a property
manager. He asked if he could break the contract. I told him that there would
be no problem, but he would need to pay me for my time. He agreed and we parted
ways with no stress.
Being able to break a contract that is not working out is a
good thing for customers and also a good way to do business. My decision to
stop long term contracts, for me is a good way to do business and even though
it may cost me some money in the short run, I think it will be a boost to my company for the long run, and I am in this for the long run.
