Keeping the outside area clean and ready for use, even in
the winter
In Southern California, the winter is not that much
different than the summer, although they say we may get the famous El Nino this
year, which means that we may get some rain. I really hope we do, so I don’t
have to hear the politicians talk about the so called historic drought.
That
being said, I use my outside patio all year long, and I BBQ all the time, but
sometimes during the winter I don’t keep the patio in as good shape as I
should.
The one thing I do consistently though is trim the trees to
get them ready for the Santa Ana winds. Keeping the patio clean and ready for
use is easy if you don’t let it get out of control. Here are a few tips to keep
your patio clean and to also get it ready for some winter weather.
The first thing I am going to do, is to put a fresh sealant
on my wood deck, that will protect the wood from any rain we may get and also
more important for So Cal, is that the sealant will also protect the wood from
the sun and keep the wood looking very nice. If your deck still looks good,
then you can use the clear sealant, but if your deck is old looking then there
are some very nice deck stains that will give your wood deck a new fresh look.
The next thing is to make sure you don’t let the shrubs and
tree’s get out of control. Keeping the plants around your deck and patio areas
well groomed will also help keep your patio and deck looking good and also make
your deck last longer. Wood decks should never have any plant life touching the
wood; the moisture from the plants will destroy the wood. Also make sure that
any pots that have plants in them are not directly on top of the wood. Moisture
is the enemy of a wood deck.
The next thing that you should do every year is check for
any termite or fungus damage to any structure on the patio, catching the damage
early will make the repairs much less expensive than if you have to replace the
entire structure.
If you need to paint the patio, the fall is a great time to
paint. Painting now will not only protect the structure, but also will keep the
patio structure in good shape for the spring and summer of the next year.
Now is also a great time to purchase new patio furniture and
anything else you need for your patio. Many stores have inventory that they
want to get rid of now that summer is over. There are many sales on-line and in
stores, so you have time to shop around for the best deals.
Keeping your patio in good shape through the winter will
save you time and money when the spring rolls around and for me, it just makes
winter patio use much more pleasant.
