Make your small home more efficient
I get complaints from people all the time, that their home
is too small and they need a larger home, but can’t afford to buy one. My
answer to them is, as long as they need to stay where they are, then they
should try and make their small home more efficient.
Often when people have a small home, one of the problems is
clutter. If you try and cram large homes furnishings into a small home, then
you will be miserable. Let’s take the kitchen: most people spend much of their
time in the kitchen, especially if the kitchen is attached to a family room or
den. The kitchen can be a room for all seasons. The kitchen can solve much of your
bedroom problems, and I am not getting too intimate when I say that. Most
people have a bed, a dresser and a desk in a bedroom. How much room can you
save if you could get rid of the desk in that small bedroom? This is where the
kitchen comes in. Most kitchens have more cabinet space then they really need,
so why not turn one of the drawers in the kitchen into a hideaway desk. Instead
of a drawer pulling out of the cabinet, a desk can pull out and when you are
through with work, you push the desk back in and the kitchen is back to being a
kitchen again. If you can dedicate a couple of drawers in the kitchen for
office work, you have just solved your work space problem and uncluttered a
small bedroom.
There are so many simple ways to save space. A stackable washer
and dryer hidden away in a closet is one example. One of the properties I manage
has the washer and dryer hidden away in the bathroom closet and you would never
know it unless you opened the closet.
Another way to save space is to use a kitchen island as a
room divider. If you have a small kitchen and you can remove the wall that
separates the kitchen and a family room or den, you could replace the wall with
a nice Island and that would solve two problems. The island will open up both
rooms so they will not be so cramped and the island can be your kitchen table.
One solution for two rooms. Of course you want to consult a contractor to make
sure the wall can be safely removed.
If you just use your imagination, you can solve many
problems that a small home has. I find that small homes can be very functional
if they are kept free from junk. Take a look around your home and see what
piece of furniture you actually use and what furniture is just taking up space.
If you get rid of the space users and keep the useful things then you will be
amazed at how much room can be saved.
