Understanding when to call it quits
Unlike being an athlete, a Real Estate Broker has a much longer
shelf life and of course since the financial reward is much greater for
athletes then Real Estate Brokers, I am grateful that 35 is not the end of my career,
since I am well past that.
I was watching the Denver Bronco’s game and Payton Manning
this past weekend and it was sad to see a great quarterback just stay in the
game too long. Now it would be difficult for him to give up the millions he is
making this year, but it is painful to watch his 4 interception game and
getting benched in the 3rd quarter.
An athlete staying too long is not a new thing. Kobe Bryant
is going through the same thing for the Lakers this year. The 5 time champion has
been hurt for most of the last 3 seasons and his comeback has been less than stellar.
The first player that I remember staying too long was Willie Mays and as a
young baseball fan the only thing I remember of maybe the greatest baseball player
of all time was him dropping a fly ball using his famous basket catch.
Calling it quits doing something you love is not an easy
thing, athlete crying at their final press conference is a very common thing,
but calling it quits may not always be the best thing to do.
When it comes to the rest of us, calling it quits just
because we reach certain age may not be the best thing to do. We work for years
building a business and developing relationships and then when the day comes
that we hang it up, much of what we worked for and what has become a huge
part of our lives is gone and the relationships we developed also can fall by
the way side.
How often do we see people retire and then seem to fade
away, mentally and physically? They seem to lose all purpose in their lives.
There is nothing wrong with slowing down and doing other things, but just giving
up what you have worked for may not be the best answer.
Even when you talk about athletes who retire, most try and
stay in the game in some way, by being commentators or part of the front office
or a coach. Walking away completely is just not good for the athlete or even
the game.
As a Real Estate Broker, I plan on doing what I do for a
long time, and even with the frustrations that come with this crazy business, I
can’t see myself walking away just because I reach a certain age.
