Happy Thanksgiving to all!
What a great day we celebrate in this Country, Thanksgiving
was given to us from people long ago and while many people really don’t
understand the origins of the Holiday, we all still can enjoy the spirit of the
day.
Thanksgiving is a day for people in this Great Country to
celebrate any way they want. Most still use the day to get together with their Family
and Friends and give thanks for all that they have, but for others, they wait
for the stores to open and they can start their Christmas shopping early. The
ladder is not a way that I would enjoy, but that’s the beauty of the day, you
can spend it the way you want. I
do feel sorry for the employees of the stores that are going to be open, and I
am seeing advertisements from stores that are not opening and they are
encouraging people to stay home and enjoy their Families. I personally hope
this trend grows and in a few years, maybe “Black Friday” will get back to
starting on the Friday after Thanksgiving and those employees don’t have to interrupt
their Holiday.
When you think about the Pilgrims and what they were going
through on that first Thanksgiving, you can only imagine what they would think
If they could see us now. The Meal that the Pilgrims had with the Indians was a
bountiful meal, but there are few records of what they had on the menu. Today, the traditional Thanksgiving
dinner includes any number of dishes: turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes,
candied yams, cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie. But if one were to create a
historically accurate feast, consisting of only those foods that historians are
certain were served at the so-called “first Thanksgiving,” there would be
slimmer pickings. “Wildfowl was there. Corn, in grain form for bread or for
porridge, was there. Venison was there,” says Kathleen Wall. “These are
absolutes.”
Whatever was on the menu, the spirit of that day has lived for centuries and we
all should give Thanks to all those who participated in that first
Thanksgiving. Many historians will differ on the substance of that day, but the
idea of taking a day to give thanks is something that no one can argue with.
