The March towards Christmas
When October comes around, I start thinking about the
Holidays and it starts with Halloween and then Thanksgiving and now Christmas
is 1 month away. As I turn on the TV this morning I see the crowds lining up
for the so called “Door Buster” deals and of course the news was obligated to
show a good old fashion fist fight to start off the Christmas shopping season.
I have to be honest, I am not much of a shopper and now with online shopping, I
don’t need to go into the malls, but I have never seen a fight in any store.
Maybe Orange County California is too boring for this type of behavior, but I
think I might like to see a couple of idiots fight it out over a certain
product. It kind of reminds me many years ago, I was watching a Baseball game
and the great Vince Scully was doing the announcing. A foul ball went into the
stands and many men were fighting to get the ball. Scully commented that here
are all these men, dressed in hundred dollar suits, fighting over a 3 dollar
baseball.
Now I understand the emotions of the Holidays and the
pressure that people feel to get the perfect gift for their children or a
friend, but when you think about it, no one really cares about the gift you get
them and your children will get over having to wait a week or two to get the
new and must have toy. If parents made Christmas more of an event rather than a
toy fest, the issues of getting the perfect toy would be the last thing on
their mind. Christmas, yes is a religious Holiday, and there is nothing wrong
with getting gifts for people, but making the gift the important part of the
day is missing the spirit of the day or even the season.
Think about all the things that we do make Christmas special.
We decorate the home with beautiful lights and trees and poinsettia’s and we
make cookies and great pastries. The smells of the season, of cinnamon and pine
cones. The season is more than just waking up in the morning and opening a
gift. Yes for children, gifs are fun and I would never want that to end. I
remember as a kid the joy of waking up and rushing to the tree to open a gift.
But the gift is less important than unwrapping paper and opening the box. The
gift gets played with for a time but is lost to the memory of the event.
The event of anything is much more important than any item
that you may get as a gift.
When you think back years later, you will not
remember any one gift, but you will remember the time that you spent with
family and friends and the events that take place during the season. Sometimes
we don’t even realize how much things mean to us. We may smell something that
makes us feel good and not know why or we may hear a song that brings us back
to our youth. Our mind remembers good times and every once in a while we get
reminded of the things we enjoyed from our past.
Stuff goes away but memories
last forever.
So as this Christmas season moves on, remember, create
memories and don’t worry about the stuff. But let me say this, if you are going
to go in the store and get into a fist fight, please call me so I can come and
get a good laugh.
