Why cities see green with short term rentals
Most people who own homes hate the new trend of short term
rentals in their neighborhoods. Homeowners know that having this type of
activity in a residential neighborhood is not safe and also brings property values
down. Some neighborhoods seem to be magnates for this type of business and
homeowners are looking to their elected officials to put a stop to it.
Some cities have stepped in a put a stop to the short term
rental businesses in residential neighborhoods, but others see a chance to make
money.
What many cities are going is forcing these short term rental operators
to purchase permits and that brings money in the city coffers, but it does not
help the homeowners in the neighborhoods who have to live with these
residential motels right next door.
I saw a questioner that the city of Anaheim had homeowners
fill out and most of the questions pertained to how much should the city raise
the fee to, but very few questions look at the real answer that homeowners want
and that is for the city to stop this type of business. Now the city so far has
put a hold for a time to new short term rentals, but that has no affect on the
ones that already exist and when the hold time runs out, there is no guarantee
that the city will make it permanent.
Cities need to start listening to the people who live in these
neighborhoods and stop looking at the potential revenue that can be generated.
The questioner I had mentioned before was very clever in making people feel
that if the city raises the fee’s then that may stop people from entering into
the short term rental business, but unless the fee is extremely high, the
people in this business will gladly pay. These short term rentals are bringing
in so much money that a $500 permit fee will have no effect.
Short term rentals should be in areas that are set up for this
type of business, which is why there are zoning laws, To protect the integrity
of residential areas. Keeping businesses in a business district is good city
policy and short term rentals should be held to the same standard as a motel.
