Pet owners can be their own worst enemy
I am a huge dog lover and have yet to get over the loss of
my beautiful Wolf Hound, apply named Wolf, so I always suggest that Landlords
allow pets into their properties. First it’s good business to allow pets. 3 in
5 people in the U.S. have pets, so you could say that if you do not allow pet’s,
you are cutting out a significant percentage of people who can rent your home.
Second, pet owners understand that it can be difficult to find a home that that they want, that will allow their pet, so
when they find one they like, they often will be very good Tenants so not to
lose what they have. Third, pet owners often will pay more for rent just to accommodate
their pet.
I often run into problems with owners who have had problems
with Tenants with pets and sometimes as much as I try to persuade, I cannot
change their mind. The biggest argument I have is the security deposit and Yes,
a pet deposit is a security deposit. I try and explain that the security
deposit will cover any damage a pet will cause, because most of the problem
with pets, is carpet and carpet is not very expensive to replace unless you
have a high end carpet.
I hate to say it, but the biggest problem is not the pet,
but the pet owner.
For some reason, some people have lost the concept of their
pet being just that, a pet. Some people seem to feel that their pet is actually
human and they need to be given human rights. They don’t train their pets and
just let the pet do whatever the pet wants. They treat the pets like children that are not taught to behave. It reminds me of when I first
started to do open houses and people would come in with children and just let
the children run all over the place without any care that this is someone else's
home. I started to implement a rule that parents need to hold the hand of their
children while in the home.
I understand that everyone loves their pets, but pet owners
need to understand that not everyone else does. I am still amazed when I walk into
a store and someone is there with their dog. I remember when only a blind
person would be allowed to bring their dog and I was always amazed at the intelligence
of those dogs and the great work they do. But today, I guess people think that
their dog needs to go everywhere with them. My sister is very rapidly becoming one
of those people, at Thaksgiving, she wanted her lap dog on her lap at dinner
and when I objected, she said that at Christmas she will eat at a table try
so the dog can be there with her. This is a problem and this type of behavior is
what creates problems for me when I try and pursued Landlords to allow pets.
These Landlords see the same thing I see and they are very
concerned that if they allow Pet’s the pet owner will be one of those that
think their pet should be able to do what the pet wants with no discipline and
I have to say, It is becoming more difficult for me to argue against that. The
more people give their pets people like rights, the less Landlords will allow
pets into their properties.
The best thing that people who own pets can do to help their
cause is to treat their pets like pets and not like people. Treat your pet very
well, but understand that they are not human and they need to be trained and
the pet will act the way the owner allows that pet to act.
The children that
came into my open house and were unruly can learn and need to be taught about
the world and will grow to become adults, pets can learn and become well
mannered pets, but your pet is not a child and they don’t need to learn how to
go shopping.
The more pet owners treat their pets like pets, the easier
it will be for me to persuade Landlords that these pet owners are responsible
and should be allowed to rent their home.
