Why Taxpayers should not pay for stadiums
I am always amazed at the aragance of Billionaire sport team owners who complain
when the taxpayer of their teams city refuse to pay for a new stadium. A great
example is the San Diego Chargers, a terrible team and a horrible organization.
The team ownership is threatening to move the team to Los Angeles and the more
they threaten the worst the team plays and the fewer actual San Diego Charger
fans show up at their games. The last game against the Bronco’s, there were many
more Bronco fans their then Charger fans. The people of San Diego were scammed
several years before, when the Padres convinced them to build a new Baseball
stadium and ever since they did, the team has been awful.
I’m most studies; using tax payer dollars do not help communities, especially
small communities. The jobs created are low paying jobs and for football
stadiums, they only have 8 games per year not counting if they make the
playoffs, if the team makes the playoffs. The money that comes out of the
coffers of the city governments and the taxpayers’ pockets go directly in the billion
dollar owners and the multibillion dollar NFL pockets.
Many times the Tax payers vote down the new stadiums and stadium
renovations, but the powers that be in those communities seems to push forward
and spend the money somehow. A great example is Los Angeles. There is no real
public support for a new stadium or a football team. Los Angeles lost two
teams, the Rams to St. Louis and the Raiders back to Oakland and now there are two
proposals to build stadiums. One will be at the old Hollywood park; The Rams
owner owns much of that land there. And another proposal in Carson to hold the Raiders
and the Chargers. Two very bad teams. The one in Carson has the backing of the
NFL and the Taxpayers; even though they are being assured it will not cost them
any money will pay the price for these stadiums. The worst part, if the Raiders
and the Chargers come, both losing franchises, the bloom will come off the rose
very quickly and the stadiums will be half empty in a few years. Southern
California will not support a losing football franchise. There are too many things
to do in Southern California to sit for 3 hours and watch a bad football team.
There are so many studies that conclude these stadiums are a net loss for
the taxpayer and the indignity of it is that although the taxpayer is paying a
huge amount for these stadiums, many of them could not afford to take their
families to a game. How does that make sense? At the least, the taxpayers
should be able to go to one game for free.
Just don’t do it! If a sports team wants to be in your community, let them
pay for the stadium. A taxpayer is much better off buying a big screen TV and
watching the games on TV wherever the game is played or the team plays.
