How small things overshadow the larger things
I have been watching the Olympics and as usual I am amazed
at the athletes and the dedication they have for being the best. I was
mesmerized yesterday by the Triathlon and the Gold medal winning Gwen Jorgensen
of the United States. She was an accountant
before she was recruted to become a Triathlon participant and in the 2012
London games she had a flat tire in the bike portion of the event and was out
of the running. Her perseverance, shows all of us that just because we may fail
at a point in our lives, we need to move forward and continue to try.
This
story about Gwen is only one story that not only inspires, but entertains us
and as the Olympics come to an end today, so many of those moments should be
remembered.
The Bad
Unfortunately for several days
a story about some idiot American swimmers captured the Media coverage and will
be remembered more then some of the great performances. I was amazed at the
coverage and one commetator on a business channel said several times that this
was a “Disaster”. What does that mean? No one died or even got injured except
for a toilet and the only real losers are the athletes themselves. We really
don’t even know what happened and it is not important. This is a great
example of how little things overshadow the larger more important stuff. If
this is called a “Disaster”, what do we call it when a nightclub gets shot up
in Florida, or a bomb goes off at the Boston Marathon, or people are shot up in
San Bernardino.
The Small overshadows the large
This example of small things
taking on a life of their own is a lessen that we can learn when it comes to
our investment properties and how we can make these properties wonderful, but
if one small thing is not right, it can ruin the efforts that are made.
Lets think about a Tenant who
loves the property and all is going well until the toilet overflows. They call
to get it taken care of and the plumber does not come until the next day. Now
this is a small inconviniece for the Tenant, but it can overshadow the Tenants
enjoyment of the rest of the property. If the plumbing issue was responded to
quickly, no problem, but the delay can leave a bad taste in the Tenants mouth
for a very long time.
The big picture
One of the biggest complaints
that Tenants have is slow response time to repair issues and these slow response's
will affect the way a Tenant feels especially when if comes time to renew a
lease. Remember, Tenant retention is key to being a succesful rental property
owner and you can make the property as nice a possible, but if you don’t
respond to Tenant complaints in a timly manor, all your efforts can be for
not. Always remember the big picture when you are dealing with Tenant issues.
Just like the idiot swimmers,
the bad will always overshadow the good.
Congratulations
I want to congratulate all
the athletes who have made us proud and forget about those that did not.
