Louisiana reminds us what water damage looks like
When we see the unbelievable flooding in Louisiana and all
the belongings to the homeowners stacked up in the streets, it reminds us what devastation
water can cause. This type of devastation of course is on a mass scale, but
water, whether it be a flood from the weather or a broken water line in your
home, will destroy much of what it comes in contact with. Water and building materials just do not mix.
The Real Damage
The real damage from the flooding in Louisiana will come
when the people go back to their homes and realize that trying to save what is
left may not be possible. The water will be very difficult in the flood area’s
to dry out and for the most part, any home that has been saturated will have to be torn down and rebuilt from
scratch. The mold and mildew will be so wide spread that trying to save any part of the home will be difficult.
Mother Nature wins all the time
There is not much that can be done to prevent flooding in
some areas, maybe better drainage or building homes above the flood line, but
Mother Nature will always surprise us and anytime we think we have the perfect
plan, we find out otherwise. The best thing we can do is be prepared.
Preventative measures
In our homes, we can do something’s about preventing water
damage. First, builders can put floor drains near washing machines and in
specific areas of the home where water will gather if there is a broken water
line.
The first thing every homeowner and Landlord should do is check their old water lines for the toilets, sinks and washing machines. Use
the steel braided supply lines when you replace them.
Next, the worst feeling is when your toilet is flooding and
the old shutoff valve will not turn, you should replace the old shut off valves
with quarter turn ball valves. I like the Shark Bite valve because they are
easy to install, but if you are not familiar with installing water valves then
call a plumber.
Another thing that you can check is the water pressure to
the home. If the pressure is too high, it can cause a pipe to burst. The
pressure to a home should be 55 to 75 psi. Again, if you are not sure how to cheek
this, you can call a plumber. It is not hard to do, but getting these steps
done right is worth the cost of a plumber.
Taking some time to make these changes will save you money
in the long run and keeping your plumbing working correctly will also make your
Tenants happy if you are a Landlord.
