Fall is in the air
Yes even here in Southern California we have seasons and
fall, which is my favorite time of the year, is coming close. Now we are
heading into the last part of the summer and here in Orange County California,
September is usually very hot and I’m sure this September will be no different, but we should not forget that just around the corner a weather change is coming.
Preparing for the Fall
How do investment property owners prepare their home even here is Southern
California for the fall.
We get what is called “Santa Ana Winds” here and they are a
warm, sometimes hot wind that starts blowing in October and can run through
March and sometimes even show up other times of the year. Now, I don’t want to
compare these winds to what other parts of the country goes through with
Hurricanes and Tornado's. But the Santa Ana Winds can do quite a bit of damage.
These winds can exceed 40 miles per hour and for an area that prepares
more for earthquakes then weather events, the Santa Ana Winds can create real
issues for Home owners.
Preparing for the fall winds can be important and what I do
and have already started is to trim all my trees so that the winds blow through
them with ease and do not blow the trees down. Now I don’t have many trees but
I have a few and in the summer, they grow very full. I just trimmed one of my
pine trees and it was amazing how big it had become. I am going to start on the
Olive tree this weekend and that will be a good 2 day job. The importance of
trimming the trees can be the difference of having the tree survive or having
the tree blow over. One of the properties that I manage had a tree blow over
last year and that was unfortunate, because it was a very nice Orange tree.
Luckily no one got hurt and there was no damage as a result of the tree falling
over.
Fire Preparation
Another important thing to do is if your home is in a fire
area, clear a good section around the home of any dried debris and if possible
have a fire break around the home. The Santa Ana Winds create dry conditions
that are conducive for fires.
Your roof is also very vulnerable to the Santa Ana winds, so
make sure that after a good wind, you check and make sure you roof is still intact.
You don’t want to be surprised when the rains come that you have a damaged
roof.
The fall is a great time of year, but the weather change can
create some challenges. Try to prepare your home and investment property before
the winds arrive.
