It’s true; you can’t see the forest for the trees
We all have situations where we miss something that is right
in front of our face, and then when we realize what we did, it drives us crazy.
I had a situation the other day, that I still scratch my
head that I did not see what was right in front of me.
My Brain went Flat
I was in the Costco parking lot and as I was backing out of
the space, I had a flat tire. My first reaction was to call the Auto Club. They
said someone would be there in ½ hour. That time came and went and no one
showed. As the time rolled on, I was getting more and more frustrated. 1 hour
later the truck came and the man put the funny looking spare on. As I was driving away,
I had an epiphany. I was parked right behind the Costco tire center and it never
crossed my mind to have them put on two new tires. In the hour I waited for the
Auto Club, I’m sure the job would have been done. So not only did I waist 1
hour waiting for the Auto Club, but I had to waist more time and go get the new
tires. The funny thing was that as I was walking out of Costco to my vehicle, I
walked right past the tire center. The other thing was that as I was waiting
for the Auto Club, a Costco employee walked by and I told him about my
situation and he never said, “Why don’t you get the tires here”. Every time I
think about it, it still drives me crazy.
See the whole picture
I know this is a small thing, but it makes me think, how
often we miss what is right in front of us. I used the expression “you can’t
see the Forest for the trees” and this expression is used when someone is so
involved in the details of a problem, they fail to look at the situation as a
whole. That describes me and the tire situation perfectly. I was so involved
with thinking about the flat tire and getting back on the road, I failed to see
the simple solution.
In my business of Property Management in Orange County Ca, I
want to see the whole situation and not get so involved with the problem that I
may miss a simple solution. This experience I had with the tire was a great
lesson and it taught me to relax and think about the entire situation and not
to get bogged down in the outcome without looking for a better solution.
