A little pride goes a long way
The other day I was doing my semiannual check of the smoke
alarms and c/o detectors for one of my properties, and a refreshing thing
happened. Before I had walked in the home, the Tenant had just finished mopping
the floor. I was actually early for the appointment, so I’m sure the Tenant was
timing the mopped floor to be done before I arrived, but I am actually glad I arrived
to see the floor still wet. It was refreshing to see someone actually cleaning
to make a good impression on the Property Manager.
Move your stuff
No surprise to me, after seeing the effort made to clean the floor, before my arrival, the rest of the house was immaculate. All the alarms
worked and I had a very good conversation with the Tenant. The reason it was so
refreshing, was that so often I go into homes to do these inspections and I am
amazed at how the homes were not cleaned up at all. Clothes lying around and
most of the home in disarray. Sometimes I actually have to climb over junk to
get to where I need to go. I am not concerned with people being messy as long
as they are not damaging the property, but I still think it’s surprising that
people have no care of what king of impression they make on whoever comes to
her home, whether it be the Property Manager or anyone else.
It reminds me of when I was a contractor and I would go into
someone’s home to look at something that needed to be done and no effort was
made to clear the area for me. I had to move personal items out of the way and
some of the items were VERY PERSONAL. Why are people like that?
Put on some decent clothes
I wish I had an answer, but it kind of reminds me of how
people dress when they fly. Years ago when you were going to take a trip you
dressed up before getting on the plane. Today people look like slobs, wearing
flip flops and t shirts. Have we become
too casual? There is nothing wrong with being casual, but be neat about it. Look at old movies and by old, I mean the 60’s,
all the men wore ties and coats. Now I’m not saying we should all were ties all
the time, but there is nothing wrong with dressing up to go out in public. I’m
going to speak to men, please stop with the sweats and shorts if you are going
to a public place. Put on a pair of pants and a shirt with a collar and shoes.
Change their way's
Getting back to the Tenant who cleaned the property before I
arrived for the inspection, I really appreciated it and I told him so. Having
the pride in himself and also showing respect for the property was a nice
refreshing change and it sets the bar for others. From now on, in my business of Property Management in Orange County Ca. when I go to do theses inspections, I am going to
mention this experience to other Tenants that don’t seem to share the same
pride that he does. Do I think it will make them change their ways, no. But at
least they will understand that I think the way they allow people to see their
property is less then acceptable and maybe it will make them think, the next
time I come over.
