Saying goodbye to a legend
Today the long time Dodger announcer Vince Scully is announcing
his last game after 67 years of being the best. Most people who have listened
to the Dodgers do not remember a Dodger game without Vince being part of the
team. Over the last few years he has slowed down, traveling with the team much
less, but even though he is in his 80’s, he has not lost a step.
I don’t listen to Dodger games much anymore, but as a young
boy, who loved the Dodgers, I listened without fail and Scully filled my ears
with the essence of each game. He painted a picture that no other announcer has
ever painted. His ability to announce the game, but also bring the history of
the game to life is an ability that I have never heard before.
His voice has brought us so many magnificent moments that to
list them would take up the whole page, but the amazing thing about Vin, is
that he could recall each of those moments as if they happened yesterday and
paint the picture of those moments that would keep all of us at the edge of our
seats. What I remember most about listening to Vince, is sneaking the radio
into school to listen to a day game, or hiding the radio under my sheets to
hear the end of a game, (although I am pretty sure my parents knew) and even
having tears in my eyes as I remember one night that Vince had to tell me and
all who were listening that the Dodgers year was over without going into the
playoffs. Vince kept me company so many nights as I hit a baseball off a tee in
the back yard, and I missed his voice when the Dodgers had a day off or the
season ended.
Just like so many in Southern California, Vince Scully was a
big part of my youth and even though I rarely hear has voice anymore, I feel
sad to see him go. I have been watching the last games of the season and of his
career and he really has not lost a step. He is retiring because he wants to
enjoy the time he has left and at the age of 89 he deserves it. He says his 16
grandchildren will keep him very busy and I am sure they will. If anyone
wonders why he has decided to not do playoff games, he did not want to distract
from the Dodgers on the field. Just like his career, it was never about him,
but about the game.
Even though it has made him a little uncomfortable at times,
the last couple of weeks have been about him and for me, I hope that his days
are filled with as much joy as he has brought myself and all the rest of the
people who enjoyed his amazing ability to paint the picture of so many games
for 67 years.
Thank you VIN!
