When
power goes down, you will want a Generator
Watching the Hurricane in
Florida, it makes all of us think about preparation we need to take if we get
caught up in a situation where we are stuck in our homes without services for a
period of time.
Food supply
Here in California, we don’t
worry about Hurricanes, but we do worry about Earthquakes and in some area’s
flooding and mud slides. Whatever the event, being prepared to be isolated in
our homes for a period of time is vital.
Having food and water is the first
thing to think about. I keep a supply of bottled water for drinking and also
larger bottles of water for cleaning. I also keep plenty of canned foods like
soup and also other instant pouches of food, and things like peanut butter,
jams condensed milk, dried cereal and
many other foods that have a long shelf life. You can also buy long term food
supplies that last years, but I have never tried them, so I will stick with
what I find in the store. I also recommend a few bottles of rubbing alcohol and
other medical supplies.
Having a Generator
The next thing that will help is
a Generator. There are many ways to go when talking about a generator. I have a
large mobile generator that has a battery starter and 8000 watts of power.
This
will keep the refrigerator and lights on and will have enough power left for
other things. This generator is loud, but it works and I paid around $750.00
for it. You do need to have Gasoline available, and you need to store it
safely. I always run my generator every month so when I need it, I know it is
ready. Running it also makes sure I rotate the Gas.
I have thought about having a permanent
generator installed, but they are expensive, starting at $2,500 and can go to
$20,000. You also need to have these generators installed and that will also
run from $500 to a few thousand dollars depending
on the size of the generator.
These generators are great if the power goes out
because they will go on automatically and keep the house operating. They are
not mobile, so if you need to leave, the mobile generator can go with you.
Either way, getting yourself a
generator even a small one can really help if your power goes out. Keeping the
lights and refrigerator on and being
able to charge your phone can really make riding out a power outage more
comfortable and safer.
You can get a small 1800 watt generator for under $200 and that will at least keep a few essentials running.
