Change the Kitchen cabinet mindset
I know most people will read this and think I am crazy, but
we need to change the way we look at our kitchen cabinets. People pay thousands
of dollars for their kitchen cabinets and what happens once they are installed
is that they get stuffed with things that will never be used. Think about it,
you are basically paying for a very expensive storage space.
Look at the ugly truth
Today, go to your kitchen cabinets and open them and look
inside, I mean really look inside. What you will probably see is a cabinet
stuffed full of dusty old dishes and pots and pans that you have not used in
years. Also unfortunately you will probably see several dead bugs that have
also not see the light of day for years. Don’t feel bad, most people will see
the same thing. In my business of Property Management in Orange County Ca. I know people want storage space and Kitchen cabinets are made to give people storage space, but in
the kitchen, where we make food that we eat, we should want a clean usable
space. I have an Idea that I have implemented in my kitchen.
Have an open mind
First I got rid of the cabinet doors and removed the old
shelving. I bought some lined rough siding, 4x8 t1-11 siding that cost is
around $30.
Then I bought a 2x12x12 piece of Douglas fir that runs around
$15.00. And I bought some 1x2 pine for trim.
I boxed the empty space with the t1-11 and used the 2x12 for
the shelf. This way I have a cabinet that is only 12 inches deep. Plenty of
space for the essentials but not enough room for storage and since there is no doors;
the incentive is to keep the space clean and organized. I trimmed the space
with the 1x2 and used a natural stain and poly urethane seal and I am done.

Now I know this is not for everyone, but if your cabinets
need a facelift, this is an inexpensive way to do it and it is also a very good
way to make your kitchen clean and void of junk.
