It may sound simple, but knowing
the name of people you talk to, puts you at a great advantage when trying to win
their trust and in business, it can make the difference between, success and failure.
The lessen of the Lumber Yard
I often tell the story about how important
it was when the Grandson of a business I frequented, always called me by my
first name. I was working as a contractor and I would go into a Lumber Yard
called Ganahl Lumber. I was there several days per week and the only person
who knew my name was the Grandson of the owner. I did not even see him that
often, but when I did, he always made me feel as though I was important to
their business just by saying “Hi Tony”. How simple is that?

The The power of recall
The problem is that many of us
forget a name as soon as someone introduces themselves to us, me included. It
drives me crazy when I can’t recall a name and in business, it can be a fatal
mistake. If I am trying to convince a prospective client to join my company and
allow me to manage their property, forgetting their name can make that person
not feel at ease with me and distant. But if I address them by name that may
put them at ease and make them feel as though they know me and that they are important
to me. We all want to do business with people we like and I don’t think we like
too many people who don’t know our name.
Techniques can be effective
There are many techniques to help
us remember names. The one I like best is to repeat the name back to the person
as soon as they introduce themselves. If someone say’s to me, “Hi my name is
Jennifer”, I say, Hi Jennifer, I am Tony”. Repeating the name several times in
a conversation will also help.
Another technique is to compare
that person to someone or something that will remind you of their name. If that
same person say’s, “Hi, my name is Jennifer”. I can immediately picture someone
else I know whose name is Jennifer and hopefully every time I see the new
Jennifer, she will remind me of the Jennifer I know. This technique is also
very effective.

Practice makes perfect
There are many techniques out
there and finding the one that works for you will be a great help to you in
your personal relationships and also your business relationships. Knowing someone’s
name shows effort, especially when you have only met a person once or twice.
Practicing whatever Technique works for you is essential to making the technique automatic. You don't want to think about it, you just want to have the technique become part of you personality. Image how you feel when you have met someone, one time and then a month later,
you meet them again and they remember your name. It makes you feel as though
you are important and you will feel much more at ease with that
person. Let’s just hope you remember their name as well. How embarrassing will
it be if she says? “Hi Tony”, and I come up blank. It’s hard to hide that confused
face.
